2026 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class: More Screens, More Lights, and a Mild-Hybrid V8
Mercedes puts its new MB.OS software and a mild-hybrid V8 into the 2026 Maybach S-Class, adding synthetic leather options to its flagship luxury sedan.
Mercedes-Benz just revealed the 2026 Maybach S-Class with a mild-hybrid V8 and a grille that lights up at night. The S 580 variant pairs a 4.0-liter V8 with an integrated starter generator to produce 529 brake horsepower. An electric motor throws in an extra 22 horsepower when you need to merge on the highway.
The V12 engine survives in the S 680 model for buyers in the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Autocar, a British automotive magazine, reports that the UK will not receive the 12-cylinder engine. If you want the smoothest idle on the market, you will have to live in the right zip code.
Certain countries will receive a plug-in hybrid version. The S 580e pairs a 3.0-liter inline-six engine with an electric motor to provide around 62 miles of electric-only driving range. The added weight of the battery pack will barely register in a vehicle this massive.
The dashboard now runs on something called MB.OS. This is the first time Mercedes has put its new operating system into a Maybach. The massive glass screens take up most of the front cabin space, and fingerprints will be a constant problem on those glossy surfaces. Keep a microfiber cloth in the glovebox.
The infotainment display utilizes a zero layer interface concept. The navigation map always stays in the background while audio and climate controls float on top. You do not have to dig through three submenus to adjust the cabin temperature.
Over-the-air updates are standard with the new infotainment architecture. The car requires a constant cellular connection to send data back to the manufacturer. Expect regular changes to the user interface whether you ask for them or not.
The voice assistant now uses generative artificial intelligence to handle commands. The system tries to recall previous interactions and hold complex conversations with the driver. Talking to your car rarely feels natural and usually distracts you from the road. Stick to the physical buttons on the steering wheel when you need to change the radio station.
The updated exterior styling generates a lot of visual noise. The front grille is 20 percent larger and features illuminated lettering. Rose gold accents now sit inside the headlight assemblies.
A dark appearance package called the Night Series is available from launch. This option replaces the bright exterior chrome with darkened metal and offers unique paint combinations like obsidian black and mojave silver. The wheels are swapped for aero-efficient black discs covered in tiny Maybach logos.
There is a strange addition to the options list this year. Mercedes is offering artificial leather and cloth upholstery as optional extras for the first time in a Maybach. Why would anyone pay top dollar for a luxury flagship just to sit on synthetic materials? Skip the cloth option and order the standard Nappa leather.
Extra sound deadening material was added throughout the cabin to reduce road noise. The suspension relies on a predictive system to soak up potholes before the tires even hit them. Turn the dedicated Maybach driving mode on if you have passengers in the back seat. It stops the car from jerking forward at traffic lights.
The car measures nearly eighteen feet long, making it a nightmare to park in tight urban centers. Rear-axle steering is available to help reduce the turning circle. Pay for this option if you regularly drive through narrow parking garages.
Rear seat accommodations remain the main focus of this vehicle. Buyers can specify executive seating with folding tables, a champagne refrigerator, and silver flutes. Hire a driver if you plan on using even half of these features.
Mercedes expanded its customization program to include over 150 paint colors. The sheer volume of choices means you will rarely see two identical cars on the road. Production starts at the Sindelfingen plant in Germany this April.
