Stellantis Issues 5 Billion Euro Bond and Adopts Toyota-Linked Hybrid Tech for Jeep Cherokee
Following a 22.2 billion euro EV impairment, Stellantis is raising capital and utilizing BluE Nexus and Bosch technology to launch new hybrid Jeep models.
Stellantis priced a 5 billion euro hybrid bond offering on Tuesday to reinforce its balance sheet following a 22.2 billion euro asset impairment. The global automaker is actively scaling back its fully electric vehicle ambitions and pivoting to hybrid hardware. This strategic shift includes the new Jeep Cherokee. The revived sport utility vehicle will use powertrain components from a supplier closely tied to Toyota Motor Corporation.
According to a March 11 financial disclosure from Stellantis, the multi-tranche bond includes three separate offerings. The company sold 2.2 billion euros in perpetual fixed-rate resettable notes with a 6.25 percent annual coupon. A second tranche includes 1.8 billion euros in perpetual notes with a 6.875 percent coupon. The final portion consists of 865 million pounds in British currency notes carrying an 8.25 percent initial coupon. The financing provides capital structure support after the company reported historic financial losses in February 2026.
Chief Executive Officer Antonio Filosa stated the 22.2 billion euro write-down reflects the cost of overestimating the pace of the energy transition. The company recorded 14.7 billion euros in charges related directly to realigning product plans with shifting customer preferences and revised United States emissions regulations. Stellantis absorbed impairments of 2.9 billion euros on canceled products. The company also took 6 billion euros in vehicle platform write-downs due to reduced volume expectations in the North American market. One major casualty of this scale-back was the planned battery-electric version of the Ram 1500 pickup truck. Stellantis executives determined customer demand did not support the fully electric truck program.
The hardware shift from pure electric power to hybrid systems is visible in the new Jeep Cherokee. CNBC reports the North American model uses a two-motor electric continuously variable transmission developed by BluE Nexus. BluE Nexus is a Japanese joint venture formed in 2019 by Aisin and Denso. Both automotive parts suppliers are heavily backed by Toyota Motor Corporation. Toyota holds a direct equity stake in the joint venture. A Stellantis spokesperson confirmed the supplier arrangement to CNBC. Purchasing a core hybrid powertrain system from an entity intertwined with a primary competitor marks a rare procurement strategy in the automotive industry.
The BluE Nexus system operates as a traditional self-charging hybrid. The design combines a Stellantis gasoline engine with Japanese-engineered electric motors to improve fuel efficiency. Drivers do not need to plug the vehicle into an electrical outlet to recharge the battery. According to Stellantis, the Cherokee hybrid achieves 37 miles per gallon combined. Buyers looking for improved efficiency can access hybrid technology without installing home charging equipment or relying on public charging infrastructure. The vehicle stands as the most fuel-efficient non-plug-in Jeep currently sold in the United States. This represents a stark departure from the previous corporate focus on plug-in hybrid models under the Jeep 4xe badge.
Stellantis is also advancing extended-range electric vehicles for larger models. The company confirmed to CNBC that Bosch, a German multinational engineering company, is supplying the primary technology for the upcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer and the Ram 1500 Ramcharger. Extended-range electric vehicles feature a different powertrain architecture than traditional hybrids. The wheels are driven entirely by electric motors. A gasoline engine acts solely as an onboard generator to recharge the battery pack when power runs low. This design eliminates range anxiety for drivers hauling heavy trailers or traveling long distances where charging stations are scarce. Bosch supplies these components as standardized parts that Stellantis engineers adapt and integrate into their specific vehicle platforms.
Stellantis has not disclosed the specific financial terms of the supplier agreements with BluE Nexus and Bosch. The automaker also has not clarified how the integration of third-party hybrid components will affect the production timelines of future models beyond the 2026 Cherokee and Wagoneer targets. Corporate representatives have not stated whether the BluE Nexus partnership will extend to other brands within the Stellantis portfolio. The company plans to release a comprehensive update on its long-term strategic plan on May 21.
The move to buy hybrid systems from external suppliers allows Stellantis to bring vehicles to market faster than developing the technology internally. Thomasnet, an industrial sourcing platform, reported that United States hybrid vehicle sales grew from 7.3 percent of the market in 2023 to 12.6 percent in 2025. During the same period, battery-electric vehicle market share rose from 7.5 percent to 8 percent. Thomasnet projects hybrids will account for 18.4 percent of United States vehicle sales this year. By adopting existing hybrid hardware, Stellantis is adjusting its product lineup to match current buyer preferences while managing immediate development costs.
