Subaru Fills the Gaps with the Uncharted EV and a 420-HP Flagship
Subaru targets the budget EV market with the $34,995 Uncharted and unveils a 420-horsepower three-row flagship SUV at the New York Auto Show.
Subaru priced its new Uncharted electric crossover at $34,995. Built to mirror the gas powered Crosstrek, the compact EV offers over 300 miles of range. You must buy the base Premium front-wheel-drive version to get that exact price and range combination. The math finally works for a daily commuter.
The entry level Uncharted produces 221 horsepower and achieves an estimated 118 miles per gallon equivalent on the highway. InsideEVs, an automotive publication, reported that Toyota actually handles production for the vehicle. Dropping standard all-wheel drive on the base trim keeps the starting price low.
The only reason they did this seems to be cost cutting. Buyers wanting all-wheel drive must step up to the Uncharted Sport or GT trims. Fast charging will take the 74.7-kilowatt-hour battery from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 28 minutes.
You get serious power for a subcompact crossover, but the maximum range drops to 290 miles. Buyers can order optional two-tone paint schemes and an 11-speaker premium audio system. These creature comforts help mask the underlying budget platform.
A 420-horsepower electric SUV makes its global debut at the New York International Auto Show today. Standard all-wheel drive comes baked into the package. This output rating makes it the most powerful factory vehicle Subaru has ever sold.
Car and Driver noted that the official press release mentions the word “family” multiple times. That heavily implies a three-row configuration capable of seating more than five people. The gas powered Ascent currently sits alone as the only Subaru without a direct electric equivalent. This new flagship model clearly fills that void.
The teaser image showed a familiar design language with six-pod daytime running lights and an illuminated front logo. Building a heavy electric hauler requires massive capital and engineering resources. To absorb the development costs, Subaru leaned on Toyota again.
Sharing a platform with the upcoming Toyota Highlander EV gives the vehicle a proven foundation. Moving a heavy battery and a cabin full of people at highway speeds demands that 420-horsepower dual-motor setup. Dealerships will likely receive the first shipments late this year.
Subaru brought the Forester Wilderness Hybrid to New York. Autoevolution, an automotive news site, confirmed the model pairs a 2.5-liter engine with a dual-motor transaxle. The standard Forester Hybrid already gets nearly 600 miles of total range using this exact 194-horsepower powertrain.
Engineers gave the Forester Wilderness Hybrid a series-parallel design. The generator acts as a starter and converts engine power into electricity to recharge the traction battery. The traction motor handles driving the wheels at low speeds.
This setup keeps the internal combustion engine from bogging down when climbing steep inclines. Placing the high-voltage battery under the rear cargo floor prevents it from hindering the breakover angle. The Wilderness trim adds a 9.3-inch ground clearance and heavy all-terrain tires to the equation.
Those aggressive tires will drag down the overall fuel economy numbers. Standard hybrid models offer around 35 miles per gallon in mixed driving. You will trade some of that efficiency for the ability to clear deep ruts on a dirt trail.
Subaru dragged its feet on battery vehicles for years. Relying entirely on the slow selling Solterra left the company exposed to shifting market demands. They recently updated that model and introduced the midsize Trailseeker to expand their footprint.
The Trailseeker effectively operates as an electric Outback built by Subaru in its own factories. This aggressive rollout proves the brand stopped treating electrification as a side project. A cohesive strategy finally exists across the compact, midsize, and large SUV segments.
The brand finally has a complete catalog. Evaluate the front-wheel-drive Uncharted if you need a basic commuter car. Cross-shop the new 420-horsepower model against other three-row electric SUVs. Accept the lower gas mileage on the Forester Wilderness Hybrid if you plan to drive off the pavement.
