2025 Audi A5 Avant 2.0 TFSI quattro Review: The Cost of Progress

The Audi A4 has served as a cornerstone of the German executive landscape for three decades, but the newest iteration of this mid-size formula carries a different badge and a larger physical presence. Under the brand’s revised naming strategy, even numbers are reserved for battery-electric vehicles, which means the traditional combustion-powered mid-size estate now bears the name of the Audi A5 Avant. This vehicle competes directly in a premium segment where the estate body style remains highly favored, particularly in northern Europe. Its primary rivals are the BMW 3 Series Touring, which carries a starting price of 47,000 euros in Germany, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate, which begins at 46,221 euros, and the Volvo V60, starting at 47,990 euros. For the Audi, the entry-level front-wheel-drive Avant with a 150-horsepower petrol engine demands 46,850 euros. Our tested variant, the 2.0 TFSI quattro with 204 horsepower and all-wheel drive, commands a base price of 56,000 euros before any optional packages are selected. Order books are currently open at German dealerships, with vehicles being assembled at the company’s plant in Neckarsulm.

This vehicle is the first to be built on the Premium Platform Combustion, an architecture designed to accommodate advanced longitudinal engine installations and mild-hybrid systems. The body shell utilizes high-strength steel and aluminum to manage weight, which stands at 1,840 kilograms for this all-wheel-drive configuration. Under the hood, the two-liter turbocharged petrol engine is an evolution of the widely used EA888 engine family. In this 204-horsepower application, the engine features a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, a technology traditionally reserved for diesel or high-performance petrol powerplants. The engine operates on a modified Miller cycle combustion process, which uses early intake valve closure to improve thermal efficiency under partial load. Power is transmitted through a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission to the quattro ultra all-wheel-drive system. Under normal driving conditions, the system runs as a front-wheel-drive vehicle, engaging the rear axle only when sensors detect a slip or during aggressive cornering. The WLTP figures suggest a combined fuel consumption of 7.1 to 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers.

On the road, the 204-horsepower engine delivers its maximum torque of 340 Newton meters from two thousand revolutions per minute. The variable turbine geometry provides a smooth, linear power delivery that lacks the sudden surge of older turbocharged designs. The seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission shifts quickly, though it occasionally hesitates to downshift when sudden acceleration is requested in the default comfort mode. Selecting the sport mode sharpens the throttle response and holds gears longer, though it also increases engine noise inside the cabin. At highway speeds, the engine remains hushed, spinning at just two thousand revolutions per minute in seventh gear. Acceleration from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour is achieved in 7.6 seconds, with a top speed of 242 kilometers per hour.

During our highway test on the Autobahn at a steady 130 kilometers per hour, the real-world fuel consumption settled at approximately 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers. In heavy city traffic, that figure rises to around 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers, though careful throttle application can bring the average closer to 8.5 liters. These figures are higher than the highly optimistic WLTP ratings, which is typical for modern turbocharged petrol engines under real-world conditions. The absence of the more advanced 48-volt mild-hybrid system found on the diesel version means this petrol variant cannot coast with the engine completely shut off. It relies instead on a standard starter-generator for basic start-stop functions.

The exterior design of the A5 Avant departs from the conservative lines of its predecessor, presenting a wider, more muscular stance. The front is dominated by a wider singleframe grille with a black honeycomb structure, flanked by slim LED headlights that offer customizable daytime running light signatures. Along the side, the door handles are flush with the bodywork, using an electric capacitive sensor to release the latch when pulled. At the rear, the estate features a sloping tailgate that mimics the silhouette of a sportback, capped by a roof spoiler. The digital OLED taillights are connected by a full-width light strip and can display different dynamic light patterns depending on the chosen drive setting. The twin exhaust outlets protruding from the rear bumper are genuine metal pipes rather than the decorative plastic block-offs that have become common in this segment.

The suspension configuration features a five-link design at both the front and rear axles to control wheel movement. Buyers can choose between the standard setup, a sport suspension that lowers the body by twenty millimeters, or an adaptive damper system that adjusts its behavior through the drive mode menu. Our test car was equipped with the adaptive setup, which manages body roll effectively through rapid transitions. Over sharp highway expansion joints, the ride remains firm, though it avoids the harsh crashing sensation that plagued some previous S line models. The progressive steering ratio becomes quicker as more lock is applied, which reduces the amount of arm-twisting required in tight urban roundabouts. The system, however, filters out almost all feedback from the road, which can make the car feel distant during spirited driving. The braking system utilizes ventilated discs on both axles to handle deceleration.

Inside the cabin, the dashboard is dominated by a curved display panel that sweeps across the driver’s field of vision. This screen assembly houses an eleven-point-nine-inch virtual cockpit and a fourteen-point-five-inch central touchscreen. Audi has eliminated almost all physical switchgear from the dashboard, moving the climate controls, seat heating, and drive mode selections into the digital interface. It is like buying a premium mechanical watch only to find its bezel is adjusted via an app. Adjusting the cabin temperature requires you to tap a digital bar at the bottom of the screen, an exercise that demands your visual attention and causes noticeable distraction while driving. The steering wheel features haptic touchpads with glossy plastic surfaces that click when pressed. In hindsight, these pads are prone to accidental activation when your thumb brushes against them during parking maneuvers. A physical volume knob is located on the center console next to the gear selector.

The increased exterior dimensions translate to a cabin that feels wider and more accommodating for front passengers. The wheelbase has grown by sixty-eight millimeters, which provides an extra twenty-six millimeters of rear legroom compared to the outgoing A4 Avant. The luggage compartment has shrunk slightly, offering 476 liters of space with the rear seats in place, which represents a slight reduction from the 495 liters of its predecessor. The tailgate opens electrically as standard, revealing a wide opening with a low loading lip. The materials used throughout the upper cabin are of high quality, featuring soft-touch surfaces and precise stitching. In hindsight, the lower door panels and center console utilize a hard, scratchy plastic that feels out of place in a car costing over fifty thousand euros. An optional passenger display screen is available, allowing the front occupant to stream media or assist with navigation.

The long-term durability of this vehicle is heavily tied to its newly developed electronic architecture. The EA888 Gen 4 petrol engine has a well-established track record for mechanical reliability, utilizing a robust iron block and a refined timing chain design that has resolved the oil consumption issues of earlier generations. However, the E3 1.2 electronic architecture, developed by the Volkswagen Group’s software division, has been a source of early owner complaints regarding slow boot-up times and occasional system crashes. In hindsight, Audi has historically performed well in TUV reliability reports, with the previous A4 consistently ranking near the top of its class for low defect rates. The seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission is a matured design that benefits from regular fluid changes, making it highly durable under normal operating conditions. Standard maintenance intervals require a service every two years or thirty thousand kilometers.
