2025 Renault 4 E-Tech Review: Retro Charm Meets Real-World Usability
Is the new electric Renault 4 the ultimate subcompact EV for the everyday buyer? Read our practical, real-world review on range, interior, and costs.
Buying your first electric car often feels like choosing between a dull, sterile appliance and an impossibly expensive spaceship. Renault is trying to carve out a third path by using a healthy dose of nostalgia, and their latest effort is the Renault 4 E-Tech Electric. Sitting in the highly competitive subcompact crossover class, this car attempts to blend the styling cues of the original 1960s classic with the practical requirements of modern families. If you are looking at small family EVs in Germany today, this is a very interesting proposition. The entry-level Urban Range with a smaller battery starts at 29,400 Euros. The more practical Comfort Range with the larger 52 kWh battery tested here starts at 32,400 Euros. For the full experience, the top-tier Iconic trim pushes the price to 36,400 Euros. This pricing strategy positions the Renault 4 right in the crosshairs of its toughest segment rivals. The Fiat 600e starts at 31,950 Euros, the Jeep Avenger Electric is a steeper 38,500 Euros, and the premium-leaning Peugeot E-2008 demands 40,550 Euros.
The retro styling draws you in. However, the real battle is fought on monthly lease payments and total cost of ownership. In Germany, electric vehicle incentives have shifted, making the initial purchase price more critical than ever. Renault is leaning heavily on attractive leasing rates to move these cars, often starting under 250 Euros a month.
Here is the trade-off most buyers forget to consider before signing the finance agreement.
When evaluating any electric vehicle, range is usually the first question on everyone’s lips. For the Comfort Range model with the 52 kWh battery pack, the manufacturer claims a range of up to 409 kilometers under standard WLTP testing conditions. WLTP figures suggest that the Renault 4 is remarkably efficient. These lab-controlled numbers should always be taken as a best-case scenario, however.

In the real world, you should expect your actual mileage to drop by 15 to 30 percent depending on how and where you drive. If you are commuting at 130 km/h on the highway on a chilly winter morning, the aerodynamic drag and battery heater will combine to drag your range down to around 220 kilometers. Conversely, gentle city driving during mild spring weather will easily see you cover 370 kilometers or more on a single charge. If you live in an apartment without a home charger and rely on the public network, plan for a 30-minute stop at a DC fast charger to replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent, thanks to its peak charging rate of 100 kW. It is a highly usable amount of range for daily life. Even so, long-distance highway road trips will still require some patience. For apartment dwellers, the standard 11 kW AC charger is your best friend, allowing a full charge in about five hours at a local street pillar while you sleep.
This is a car designed for the grocery run, not the trans-continental race.
The battery pack itself utilizes Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt chemistry, often referred to as NMC. This specific composition is highly regarded for its superior energy density and cold-weather performance compared to cheaper Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry. To save weight, Renault simplified the battery housing by using four large modules instead of the twelve smaller modules seen in the older Zoe, shaving off 20 kilograms in the process. The total battery pack weighs less than 300 kilograms. LFP batteries can be charged to 100 percent daily without much worry. In contrast, you should limit the Renault 4 to an 80 percent charge for your daily commute to preserve the long-term health of the cells. Reserve the full 100 percent charge for those weekend getaways when you genuinely need every kilometer of range.
Under the retro skin, the Renault 4 is built on the AmpR Small platform. This is a clever dedicated electric architecture shared with the smaller Renault 5 hatchback. By sharing 68 percent of its components with its sibling, Renault managed to slash development costs and offer a much more competitive price.
In the world of compact EVs, millimeters matter.
The engineers stretched the wheelbase by 84 millimeters to 2,624 millimeters, giving the vehicle a total length of 4.14 meters and a height of 1.57 meters. Under the hood sits a wound-rotor synchronous electric motor producing 110 kW, which translates to 150 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque. Renault prefers this motor technology because it does not use permanent magnets. This means the car is built without rare-earth metals, making it a much more environmentally responsible choice. The motor is surprisingly efficient. It does occupy slightly more physical space under the hood than a permanent-magnet equivalent, however. The thermal management system is highly robust, featuring liquid cooling for the battery pack and a standard heat pump, which is essential for preserving winter range in colder climates.
One of the most surprising engineering decisions is found under the back of the car. Instead of using a cheap, space-saving torsion beam like almost every competitor in this price bracket, Renault has fitted a fully independent multi-link rear suspension. This premium hardware makes a massive difference in how the vehicle handles the daily grind. It handles rough city streets and sharp speed bumps with an impressive level of maturity. You do not get the annoying rear-axle thump that plagues the Jeep Avenger or Fiat 600e when driving over potholes. On the highway, the multi-link setup provides excellent high-speed stability and body control, making the Renault 4 feel like a much larger and more expensive car than its compact dimensions suggest. The monotube dampers are tuned for a comfortable, slightly soft ride, leaning into the relaxed French cruising ethos of its ancestor.
The cabin feels airy and modern, dominated by a pair of 10-inch screens running the OpenR Link infotainment system. Many modern manufacturers use these screens as an excuse to eliminate physical buttons entirely. Thankfully, Renault did not fall into this trap. Beneath the central screen, you will find a physical row of toggle switches for the climate control system, along with a tactile volume roller. This is a massive win for safety and everyday usability. Fumbling through three submenus on a touchscreen just to adjust the cabin temperature or turn down a loud song is frustrating and dangerous while driving. Keeping these functions physical means you can operate them by muscle memory alone, keeping your eyes exactly where they belong. The materials are a pleasant mix of recycled denim fabrics and textured plastics, avoiding the sea of scratchy black plastic found in budget rivals.
Practicality is where the Renault 4 really shines compared to its hatchback sibling. The trunk offers 420 liters of space, which is near the top of the subcompact class. More importantly, the loading sill is just 61 centimeters off the ground, making it incredibly easy to lift heavy grocery bags or a stroller into the back. There is a deep underfloor compartment specifically designed to store your dirty charging cables, so they do not take up valuable luggage space. If you need to haul long items, the front passenger seat folds completely flat, allowing you to slide in packages up to 2.20 meters in length. The rear seats offer acceptable knee room for adults, though tall passengers might find their heads brushed against the ceiling if you opt for the opening fabric canvas roof. The Google-based infotainment is incredibly fast and intuitive, offering excellent EV route planning that automatically schedules charging stops and preheats the battery pack before you arrive at a fast charger.
Before you run to the dealership, you should consider the mundane costs of ownership. Insurance for electric cars in Germany has seen some volatile adjustments recently, and the Renault 4, with its lightweight plastic body panels and retro front grille, could face slightly higher repair bills in a minor fender bender. Maintenance, however, should be dirt cheap compared to a petrol equivalent. There are no spark plugs, oil filters, or complex emissions gear to worry about. Renault’s warranty covers the car for two years and the battery for eight years or 160,000 kilometers, which is standard for the industry. Retro designs tend to hold their appeal better than generic crossovers. Even so, the rapid advancement of battery tech means early buyers might face steeper depreciation in three or four years.
Evaluating the long-term reliability of a brand-new model is always a bit of a guessing game. However, we can look at the underlying technology to make an educated forecast. The wound-rotor motor technology is highly proven, having been refined over many years in the older Zoe and Megane E-Tech models. There are no complex permanent magnets to demagnetize, and the single-speed reduction gearbox is mechanically simple. Renault’s decision to use a liquid-cooled battery pack from AESC also bodes well for thermal management and long-term degradation. That said, Renault’s past record with software glitches and minor electrical gremlins means you should expect occasional infotainment freezes or lag. There has already been a minor, narrow-batch battery cell recall affecting early production runs, alongside some required inverter software reprogramming. The complex heat pump system and the folding fabric roof, if selected, are also potential points of wear over a ten-year ownership cycle. It is a solid engineering effort. However, the sheer amount of new technology means a cautious approach to long-term ownership is wise.
