The Volvo EX30 is a compact electric crossover that measures 4.23 meters from bumper to bumper. It represents Volvo’s smallest vehicle in decades and sits in the fast-growing premium compact electric segment. The Swedish brand designed this car to attract younger buyers and urban commuters who want an electric vehicle without buying a large SUV.

The competition in Germany is direct and established. The Smart #1 Pro+ starts at 44,490 euros and shares the same underlying electric platform. Renault offers the Megane E-Tech EV60 with 220 horsepower starting at 40,990 euros. Hyundai sells the Kona Electric with its larger 65.4 kilowatt-hour battery for approximately 45,000 euros.

Pricing for the EX30 spans a wide range depending on battery size and trim level. The base EX30 with the smaller battery starts at 34,990 euros in Germany. The Single Motor Extended Range tested here carries a base price of 43,490 euros in Core trim. Moving up to the middle Plus trim costs 45,000 euros, while the top Ultra trim reaches 47,200 euros.

The manufacturer claims a WLTP electric range of up to 476 kilometers on a single charge for this Extended Range model. Official energy consumption figures sit at roughly 15.7 kilowatt-hours per 100 kilometers. These laboratory figures provide a standardized benchmark for comparison rather than a guarantee of daily performance. WLTP figures suggest strong efficiency under controlled test conditions and warm temperatures.

Real-world electric range consistently falls 15 to 30 percent below official laboratory estimates. Driving style, ambient temperature, and cruising speed directly alter battery depletion rates. On a German autobahn maintaining a steady speed of 130 kilometers per hour in mild 20-degree weather, the car covers roughly 290 kilometers before needing a plug. In city driving with frequent energy recovery from braking, realistic range increases to approximately 400 kilometers.

Cold weather reduces these estimates further. In freezing winter temperatures, heating the cabin and warming the battery pack increases consumption significantly. Expect winter highway range to drop closer to 230 kilometers. Preconditioning the battery while plugged in before departing helps mitigate some of this cold-weather penalty.

Volvo fitted this Extended Range model with a 69 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, of which 64 kilowatt-hours are usable capacity. The battery uses nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry, often abbreviated as NMC. NMC chemistry is a battery technology that blends nickel, manganese, and cobalt to maximize energy storage in a compact physical size.

This chemistry offers clear practical trade-offs for daily ownership. The high energy density allows Volvo to pack decent range into a small car footprint without adding excessive weight. NMC cells also hold voltage better in cold weather than lithium-iron-phosphate packs. However, NMC chemistry degrades faster if the battery is regularly charged to 100 percent or left sitting full in hot weather.

Peak direct current fast charging speed is rated at 153 kilowatts. Plugged into a 350-kilowatt fast charger, the battery recharges from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 26 minutes under ideal temperature conditions. Alternating current charging at home or public street posts operates at up to 11 kilowatts as standard, with a 22-kilowatt onboard charger included on higher trims.

Underneath the body lies Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture platform, known specifically as the SEA2 chassis. Volvo is owned by Geely, and this shared architecture underpins several compact electric vehicles across the corporate umbrella. The platform mounts the electric motor on the rear axle, making this a rear-wheel-drive vehicle in single-motor form.

The rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivers 272 horsepower and 343 Newton-meters of torque. Pushing power through the rear wheels leaves the front wheels dedicated solely to steering duties. Torque steer is completely absent when accelerating hard out of intersections. Acceleration from zero to 100 kilometers per hour takes 5.3 seconds.

Thermal management uses a liquid cooling system connected to the battery pack and drive unit. Top trim models include a heat pump, which scavenges waste thermal energy to warm the interior without drawing heavily on the main battery. Regenerative braking offers a single-pedal drive setting that slows the car to a complete stop when lifting off the accelerator pedal.

Body construction emphasizes life-cycle carbon reduction. Roughly 25 percent of the aluminum and 17 percent of the steel used in the vehicle structure come from recycled sources. Overall vehicle weight is listed at 1,830 kilograms, which is relatively light for an electric crossover carrying a 69 kilowatt-hour battery.

The suspension layout features MacPherson struts at the front axle and an independent multi-link arrangement at the rear. Steel coil springs and passive hydraulic dampers come standard across all trim levels. Air suspension and adaptive dampers are not offered on this model.

Damping is tuned toward the firm side of the spectrum. The firm springs control body roll effectively through fast corners, keeping the car flat and composed. The steering is light and precise, allowing quick direction changes in urban traffic. The turning circle is a tight 10.6 meters, which makes maneuvering in narrow parking garages simple.

On smooth highways, the ride feels planted and controlled. On broken asphalt or sharp expansion joints, the short wheelbase and stiff damping transmit noticeable vertical thumps into the cabin. Choosing the larger optional 19-inch or 20-inch alloy wheels worsens ride harshness on rough pavement. The standard 18-inch wheels provide noticeably better bump absorption.

Inside the cabin, Volvo committed to a strict minimalist interior layout. The dashboard features clean horizontal lines and no physical dials or traditional instrument cluster. A single 12.3-inch portrait touchscreen mounted in the center of the dash handles all vehicle controls and driver information.

There is no driver display screen behind the steering wheel. Speed, gear selection, turn signal indicators, and driver assistance warnings sit in a small fixed block at the top corner of the central screen. The driver must look down and to the right to check current speed.

Physical buttons for everyday tasks are entirely missing. Adjusting side mirrors requires selecting a menu on the central screen and using steering wheel buttons to move the glass. Opening the glovebox requires tapping a digital button on the screen. Climate control adjustments, seat heating, and drive mode selection are all buried within touchscreen menus. Window switches sit on the central armrest rather than on the doors.

Operating common functions purely through touchscreen menus requires taking your eyes off the road. Shifting focus from driving to find digital buttons creates unnecessary visual distraction. This control scheme reduces driving comfort and introduces a clear safety compromise during daily use.

The infotainment system runs on Google Android Automotive OS natively. Google Maps provides integrated route planning that automatically calculates charging stops and preconditions the battery pack before arrival. Google Assistant voice commands handle temperature adjustments and navigation destinations reliably.

Cabin materials focus heavily on sustainability rather than traditional leather or wood. Dash trims use recycled denim fiber, flax, or particle plastics. The front seats offer good lumbar support and remain comfortable on longer journeys. Audio is delivered by a full-width soundbar mounted along the base of the windshield, replacing conventional door speakers. Removing door speakers allowed Volvo to design exceptionally large storage pockets in the front doors.

Space in the second row is restricted. Legroom behind a tall front driver is tight, making the rear seat best suited for children or shorter adults on brief journeys. Boot capacity sits at 318 liters with the rear seats upright, expanding to 904 liters when folded flat. A tiny seven-liter compartment under the front bonnet holds the charging cable.

Evaluating long-term reliability requires looking at electrical systems, software history, and recent service campaigns. Mechanical components on Geely’s electric platform have proven durable, as electric motors and single-speed reductions require minimal scheduled maintenance. However, early production cars suffered from frequent software glitches that caused central screen reboots and key fob recognition failures.

A major recall campaign affects certain 2024 and 2025 models fitted with the 69 kilowatt-hour NMC battery pack supplied by Sunwoda. Manufacturing defects in specific battery cells create a risk of internal lithium plating, which can lead to short circuits and thermal issues. Volvo issued safety notices instructing affected owners to limit maximum charging to 70 percent until dealers replace defect-prone battery modules free of charge. Updated production runs for model year 2025 and 2026 incorporate corrected battery modules and revised software. Volvo maintains an average reliability rating across European breakdown statistics, with most owner complaints linked to software bugs rather than mechanical failures. Because this model combines new software with a recently addressed battery recall, long-term confidence requires careful monitoring.
