BMW’s Flexible Spartanburg Plant Delivers a 435-Mile Electric X5
The fifth-generation BMW X5 and all-electric iX5 debut from a flexible South Carolina assembly line, offering up to 435 miles of range and 460-kW charging.
BMW completed a $1.7 billion expansion of its plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on June 30, 2026. This facility is the first global site capable of assembling five different drivetrain types on a single assembly line. Workers can build gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen vehicles back-to-back without changing tools. It shows that manufacturing flexibility is possible when a company commits the money.
The high-voltage batteries for the electric model are assembled at BMW’s new Woodruff plant just down the road. This new battery assembly facility operates without using fossil fuels for its normal daily operations. Keeping the battery assembly local is a smart move that helps the company comply with domestic production rules.
The headline act of this factory overhaul is the new 2027 BMW iX5 60 xDrive. It represents the first time the company has built a fully electric X5, and they are assembling it in America. Power comes from a massive 141-kilowatt-hour usable battery pack made of new 120-millimeter cylindrical cells.
BMW claims the electric SUV will achieve an estimated 435 miles of EPA range on a single charge. The European WLTP rating sits at 525 miles. You should always expect real-world highway driving to fall short of those laboratory figures. Plan on getting closer to 370 miles when you are running the air conditioning on an interstate.
The charging speed is where this vehicle separates itself from other luxury electric SUVs. The 800-volt electrical architecture allows the battery to pull up to 460 kilowatts from a DC fast charger. Do not buy the electric version thinking you will charge at that rate on your morning commute because the public charging network cannot support it yet.
You can also use the car as a backup generator because it comes with bidirectional charging capabilities. A specific home charger setup is required to make it work. Make sure you calculate the cost of that electrical work before committing to this option.
The styling of this fifth-generation X5 is going to divide opinion. BMW’s designers replaced the traditional door handles with little winglet tabs at the base of the windows. Removing the iconic split-folding tailgate in favor of a single power liftgate is another controversial choice. I find the loss of that tailgate highly irritating because it was the best seat in the house for tailgating.
Inside, the cabin features a massive 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a digital display that spans the entire width of the windshield. A passenger screen measuring 14.6 inches is an optional extra. You will have to tap through menus just to adjust the cabin temperature, which is a step backward for driver safety.
The entry-level gas-powered X5 starts at $71,250. Kelley Blue Book, an American vehicle valuation and automotive research company, reported that the electric iX5 60 xDrive starts at $81,250. Those are premium prices for a vehicle that weighs 6,393 pounds.
The dual-motor electric version produces 578 horsepower and can tow up to 5,952 pounds. Can a battery that large really deliver 435 miles of range under a heavy load? I do not have the answer to that yet, but physics suggests towing will cut your range in half.
If you are not ready to go fully electric, the X5 50e plug-in hybrid is also part of this generation. It pairs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with an electric motor to make 483 horsepower. The battery has grown to 26.5 kilowatt-hours, giving the vehicle a projected 44 miles of electric-only range.
A hydrogen fuel-cell version called the iX5 Hydrogen is scheduled to arrive at a later stage. Drivers will get a projected 466 miles on a single tank. You will spend most of your time looking for a hydrogen filling station because the infrastructure does not exist in most of the country. Skip this option unless you live near a rare public hydrogen pump in California.
BMW’s competitors are currently scrambling to adjust their manufacturing plans as electric vehicle growth slows down. Mercedes-Benz and Audi have both delayed some of their electric platform goals. BMW did not put all its eggs in one basket, and this flexible Spartanburg line is the result. Choose the option that fits your daily commute, because the factory is ready to build whichever one you want.
