Toyota Admits Chinese EV Lead as Next-Gen Electric Corolla R&D Reveals Internal Crisis
An NHK broadcast exposes Toyota's internal struggle to adapt as Akio Toyoda warns the automaker cannot survive without faster EV development.
Japanese national public broadcaster NHK aired a 50-minute documentary special on July 19, 2026, granting public view inside Toyota Motor Corporation’s confidential research and development facilities in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. The cameras followed executive board meetings, clay modeling sessions, and track testing for the upcoming 13th-generation Toyota Corolla, a nameplate that has recorded more than 57 million cumulative sales across 12 model revisions since its introduction in 1966. Chairman Akio Toyoda told interviewers during the broadcast that a considerable sense of crisis currently exists within the organization.
During one sequence inside the design studio, a lead R&D engineer candidly acknowledged on camera that Toyota is losing ground to Chinese competitors. Fast-moving automakers such as BYD and Tesla have condensed product cycles through software-centric engineering, unified electronic architectures, and localized battery production. In hindsight, Toyota relied on incremental engineering refinements while Chinese manufacturers established dominant positions in EV battery supply chains and digital cockpits. Forbes, an American business magazine, noted that Toyota is working to condense its typical five-year vehicle development cycle down to roughly two to three years in order to match Chinese product cadences. To support the planned electrified variants, Toyota is investing in new battery manufacturing plants across North America and Asia, alongside gigacasting manufacturing equipment.
