2025 BMW iX2 xDrive30 Review: Range, Controls, and Engineering

The BMW iX2 xDrive30 is a fully electric compact crossover fastback manufactured in Regensburg, Germany, competing in the premium C-segment SUV market. It measures 4,554 millimetres in length and sits on BMW’s multi-energy FAAR platform alongside its boxier sibling, the iX1. In the German market, the single-motor iX2 eDrive20 serves as the entry model starting at 50,300 euros, while this dual-motor xDrive30 carries a base price of 57,400 euros. Fully optioned examples with the M Sport package routinely reach 68,000 euros. Primary market alternatives include the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron 45, which starts at 54,950 euros in Germany, the Volvo EC40 Single Motor Extended Range at 57,190 euros, and the performance-focused Smart #3 Brabus at 50,990 euros. Order books for the 2025 and 2026 model year configurations are currently open across German dealership networks.
Official testing under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure rates the BMW iX2 xDrive30 at a combined electrical consumption of 16.3 to 17.7 kWh per 100 kilometres. The manufacturer claims a WLTP driving range of between 417 and 449 kilometres on a full charge, depending on wheel size and fitted options. Laboratory figures suggest that the dual-motor layout maintains consistent efficiency across standard urban and suburban test cycles. The tested vehicle was equipped with 19-inch aerodynamic light alloy wheels running standard inflation pressures.

The iX2 shares its FAAR vehicle architecture with internal combustion and plug-in hybrid variants of the BMW X2 and X1 line. This shared platform approach places a current-excited synchronous motor on each axle, yielding combined output figures of 230 kW (313 horsepower) and 494 Nm of torque. Electrically excited motors avoid the use of rare-earth permanent magnets, relying instead on rotor windings energized through brushes and slip rings. Suspension hardware consists of single-joint MacPherson struts at the front axle and a three-link independent setup at the rear. Standard specification on the xDrive30 includes adaptive M suspension featuring mechanical, frequency-selective damping that lowers ride height by 15 millimetres. The spring rates are noticeably firm to control the vehicle’s two-tonne mass through cornering transitions. Over sharp transverse ridges and urban speed bumps, the dampers transfer vertical impacts into the cabin rather than absorbing them completely. On sweeping rural roads, however, the body control remains flat and predictable. Steering inputs are directed through a rack-and-pinion gear with speed-sensitive electromechanical power assistance.
The cabin layout features BMW’s Curved Display, combining a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch central screen behind a single glass pane. Primary HVAC functions, including temperature control, fan speed, and seat heating, are integrated into the touchscreen interface running Operating System 9. Physical rotary dials for the iDrive system have been omitted from the floating center console, leaving driving mode selectors, a gear switch, and a roller wheel for audio volume. Adjusting fan speed through nested glass menus while driving feels like trying to write a legible postcard on a jostling commuter train. Younger passengers, including my son, tend not to mind touchscreen submenus, though navigating them while driving requires physical glance shifts away from the windshield. Physical switches remain on the steering wheel spokes for cruise control, audio track selection, and voice command activation.
Boot capacity in the iX2 xDrive30 measures 525 litres with the rear seatbacks in their upright position. Folding the 40:20:40 split rear bench expands total cargo volume to 1,400 litres, which represents 35 litres less space than the combustion-engined X2 due to rear motor placement. Rear seat headroom is restricted by the sloping roofline, limiting comfortable seating for adult passengers over 180 centimetres in height. Operating System 9 incorporates cloud-based navigation, third-party app integration, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Standard driver assistance features include front collision warning, lane departure warning, and parking assistance with a reversing camera. The maximum braked towing capacity for the xDrive30 variant is rated at 1,200 kilograms.
Long-term durability analysis for the iX2 relies on historical data from the FAAR platform and BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive componentry. Eliminating permanent magnets in the synchronous motors removes raw material supply risks, however carbon brushes in current-excited rotors introduce a wear item over extended high-mileage ownership. ADAC breakdown statistics for the closely related BMW X1 place the platform in the upper quartile for mechanical reliability across European road networks. Software stability in Operating System 9 has required periodic over-the-air updates to resolve occasional latency issues in display startup times. In hindsight, platform sharing across petrol, hybrid, and electric variants simplifies chassis spare parts availability while maintaining established assembly quality standards. Component manufacturing takes place at BMW’s Regensburg plant, where the electric drive units are integrated on the main assembly line.
