The Bolt Dies in 2027 to Save the Gas SUV
GM plans to end Chevrolet Bolt production again as Fairfax Assembly shifts capacity toward higher-volume crossovers.
Summer 2027.
Car and Driver reported that is when General Motors expects to build the last 2027 Chevrolet Bolt.
That gives the revived Bolt a short run after GM brought it back as an entry point EV.
The same reporting put the Bolt’s starting price under $30,000 and said GM moved it to the North American Charging Standard plug. It was supposed to be the simple answer for buyers who wanted an EV without a luxury badge.
GM’s problem is floor space and model mix. The Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas cannot build everything at once. The reporting cited GM plans to prioritize gasoline crossovers there in the next phase of the plant’s schedule, including the Chevrolet Equinox and the Buick Envision.
The Envision matters because it has been built in China, and Chinese-built vehicles have become a trade policy target. Electrek and other outlets tied the Fairfax shift to avoiding tariffs and reducing exposure to cross-border friction.
None of this makes the Bolt a bad car. It makes it the car GM is willing to sacrifice when a plant needs to feed higher-volume programs.
If the schedule holds, the practical outcome is a hole in GM’s low-cost EV lineup again. The company will still sell EVs. It just will not have a Bolt-shaped entry point once the run ends.
