The 2026 Lexus ES Reverses the Script, Launching Electric First
Lexus introduces the eighth-generation 2026 ES sedan, launching the fully electric 350e and 500e models ahead of the traditional hybrid variants.
The eighth-generation 2026 Lexus ES is officially arriving at dealerships this April. The Japanese automaker is prioritizing its new battery-electric models, the ES 350e and ES 500e, ahead of its traditional gasoline offerings. For a brand that built its modern reputation on the quiet competence of its hybrid sedans, launching the fully electric versions first is a notable shift in scheduling. The core hybrid model, known as the ES 350h, is currently scheduled to follow in June.
The foundation of this rollout is a new architecture the manufacturer calls a multi-pathway platform. It is an evolution of the previous generation’s TNGA-K underpinnings, adapted to support both battery-electric and internal-combustion drivetrains on the same assembly lines. This modified chassis is the engineering equivalent of a reversible jacket, designed to accommodate two entirely different climates without altering the fundamental silhouette. The brand is, however, pushing its electric variants to the front of the line this time. The battery pack, a 74.7-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion unit, sits flat beneath the passenger compartment.
The front-wheel-drive ES 350e provides an EPA-estimated 307 miles of range. My son tends to view traditional hybrids as temporary half-measures, preferring fully electric options with zero tailpipe emissions. Lexus seems to be courting that exact demographic by pricing the electric sedans quite aggressively right out of the gate. According to Kelley Blue Book, an automotive research and vehicle valuation company, the electric trims will actually serve as the most affordable entry points into the new ES lineup. The base 350e Premium starts at $48,795 including the destination charge. In hindsight, undercutting rivals like the BMW i4 and Audi A6 e-tron was likely the best way to guarantee early foot traffic. Pricing for the all-wheel-drive ES 500e begins at $51,795.
The exterior dimensions represent a measurable increase over previous generations. The vehicle is 6.5 inches longer and 2.2 inches wider than the model it replaces, giving it a much more planted stance on the road. The brand introduced a new multi-link rear suspension for this generation, which is designed to improve power delivery to the pavement and reduce overall body roll. A new exterior paint color called Wavelength is available across all powertrain options.
Inside the cabin, the layout borrows heavily from the LF-ZC concept vehicle shown at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. The longer wheelbase translates to a measurable 1.4-inch increase in rear legroom, alongside minor gains in headroom and shoulder space. Drivers operate a 14.0-inch touchscreen powered by the latest iteration of the Lexus Interface software, completely replacing the older trackpad system. The top-tier Luxury trim offers an optional Executive package that adds power-adjustable, ventilated, and massaging rear seats alongside a passenger-side ottoman. That specific feature suggests the target demographic might occasionally prefer to be driven rather than drive, an unusual but welcome addition for a midsize sedan. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto natively.
Buyers will find a North American Charging System port built directly into the passenger-side front fender. This means owners can use modern Superchargers without relying on a dongle, avoiding a common annoyance for early electric vehicle adopters. Fast charging the battery from ten to eighty percent takes approximately thirty minutes under ideal conditions at compatible direct-current fast-charging stations. The vehicle also comes standard with Lexus Safety System+ 4.0, which includes upgraded dynamic radar cruise control and risk avoidance emergency steer assist. Luxury trims gain traffic jam assist and lane change assist for hands-free driving support in congested highway conditions. A standard CCS charging adapter is included in the trunk for broader network access.
The dual-motor ES 500e generates a combined 338 horsepower, while the single-motor ES 350e produces 221 horsepower.
The electric models are slated for April delivery across the United States. The 350e Luxury and 500e Luxury trims are priced slightly higher, starting at $57,195 and $60,195, respectively. Dealerships are already accepting orders for the battery-electric models. The hybrid ES 350h will utilize a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with the company’s sixth-generation hybrid drive when it reaches showroom floors at the beginning of summer.
