Porsche Opens the 911 GT3 Roof with the Manual-Only S/C Model
Porsche revealed the 2026 911 GT3 S/C drop-top. The $275,350 convertible pairs a naturally aspirated flat-six engine with a mandatory manual transmission.
Porsche revealed the 911 GT3 S/C on Tuesday. The automaker created a convertible variant of its track-focused GT3 by combining a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine with a six-speed manual transmission and a folding soft top. According to corporate filings from Porsche, the letters S/C stand for Sport Cabriolet. Deliveries begin in the fall of 2026. Buyers in the United States face a starting price of $275,350. The development matters because it proves automakers still see immense value in catering to driving enthusiasts who want light, gas-powered performance cars while the broader automotive industry transitions to battery-electric platforms. Building high-margin combustion sports cars provides crucial funding for the expensive research and development required for corporate electrification goals.
The engineering focuses heavily on weight reduction to offset the powered retracting roof. The vehicle weighs 3,322 pounds. That figure keeps the convertible within 60 pounds of the fixed-roof GT3 Touring model according to curb weight data published by Car and Driver, a United States automotive magazine. To achieve this, engineers borrowed carbon-fiber reinforced plastic body panels from the limited-run 911 S/T model. The hood, front fenders, and doors all use the composite material. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes come standard. CarsGuide, an Australian automotive portal, reports these brakes save 20 kilograms compared to cast iron alternatives. The car also rides on staggered center-lock magnesium wheels measuring 20 inches in the front and 21 inches in the rear. These wheels remove another nine kilograms of unsprung mass from the vehicle. A compact lithium-ion battery provides an additional weight saving of four kilograms.
Powertrain specifications focus on sensory engagement and high engine speeds. The engine produces 502 horsepower and revs to a 9,000-RPM limit. Buyers cannot order the car with an automatic transmission. Porsche opted to offer only a short-ratio six-speed manual gearbox to maximize driver involvement. Man of Many, an Australian lifestyle publication, confirms the engine features aggressive camshafts borrowed directly from the track-only 911 GT3 RS. The engine also breathes through flow-optimized individual throttle bodies and utilizes specialized oil coolers. The combination pushes the car from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds. The vehicle reaches a top track speed of 194 miles per hour. A lightweight stainless steel sports exhaust system with two central black tailpipes comes standard to amplify the mechanical noise.
People might wonder if removing the roof from a GT3 compromises the structural rigidity and handling of the original car. Porsche anticipated this concern by utilizing the specific chassis tuning of the GT3 Touring. The front suspension utilizes a double-wishbone layout. Frank Moser, the vice president of the 911 and 718 model lines at Porsche, stated in the official announcement that the powertrain comes into its own on winding roads when the roof is down. The convertible roof itself features a magnesium frame to maintain a low center of gravity and retracts automatically in 12 seconds. The interior strictly holds two people. Buyers can choose to leave the space behind the seats empty or order a custom storage box, though Porsche notes the box adds 22 pounds to the vehicle.
The production strategy for the GT3 S/C marks a departure from recent Porsche convertible models. Porsche designated the vehicle as a standard series production model. The automaker will not cap production at a specific numbered limit, which changes the formula used for the restricted volume of the 911 Speedster released in 2019. Availability will simply depend on factory capacity and dealer allocations. Inside the cabin, buyers receive four-way adjustable sport seats wrapped in black leather as standard equipment. Customers can optionally select lightweight folding bucket seats equipped with carbon-fiber shells. Buyers looking to customize the vehicle further can select the Street Style package. This optional equipment group adds contrasting red exterior graphics, tinted headlights, and an open-pore wood gear shift knob.
Global pricing reflects the premium positioning of the vehicle. While United States buyers start at $275,350, international markets face different tax and import structures. Reports from Man of Many indicate the starting price in Australia reaches $588,500 AUD before mandatory on-road costs. The exact availability of dealer allocations remains unknown. High demand for manual Porsche models historically leads to long waitlists and significant dealer price premiums. Dealerships manage individual allocations, and the manufacturer order books opened alongside the Tuesday announcement. Buyers will need to negotiate directly with their local showrooms to secure a build slot. The existence of the GT3 S/C confirms that lightweight internal combustion engineering still commands a passionate and highly profitable segment of the global automotive market.
