Ferrari NV unveiled the Luce, its first all-electric production car, on May 25, 2026, in Rome. The base price for this five-seat liftback is estimated at 640,000 dollars. It is a massive departure from the scream of a V12 engine.

The share price of Ferrari dropped 6 percent in Milan trading the morning after the reveal. Investors wiped out roughly three billion pounds in market capitalization within hours. The market does not seem to know what to make of an electric car from Maranello.

Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson designed the vehicle through their creative collective, LoveFrom. The exterior is a smooth, uninterrupted shape that has been compared to a bar of soap. You will look at this machine and wonder if the Apple design team has finally built their long-rumored Apple Car.

The vehicle sits on massive, staggered wheels measuring 23 inches at the front and 24 inches at the rear. These are the largest wheels ever fitted to a production car from the brand. They look disproportionate on a vehicle that spans over five meters in length.

Four radial-flow permanent-synchronous motors generate a combined 1,035 horsepower. Acceleration to 62 miles per hour takes just 2.5 seconds despite a heavy 4,982-pound curb weight. You must respect the straight-line speed, but weight is the enemy of handling.

A 122-kilowatt-hour battery pack supplied by SK On provides the power. Testing under the European WLTP cycle yields a claimed range of 329 miles. You should probably expect around 250 miles of actual highway range when driving under normal conditions.

The vehicle is the first five-seater in the history of the company. Only one other four-door model has ever rolled out of Maranello. Purists are complaining that this is a family car disguised as a supercar.

Luca di Montezemolo, the former chairman of Ferrari, has expressed intense frustration with the new direction. Quattroruote, an Italian automotive magazine, reported that the reveal sparked fury among some of the brand’s oldest collectors. You cannot easily sell a quiet, heavy cruiser to people who grew up on high-rpm petrol engines.

Ferrari patented an acoustic system that uses a physical accelerometer on the rear axle to capture mechanical vibrations. These waves are equalized and amplified through speakers inside and outside the cabin, acting like an electric guitar pickup. It is an attempt to create an authentic driving soundtrack without relying on fake synthesizer noise.

The cabin contains zero large touchscreens for managing secondary vehicle functions. The design team opted for physical buttons, mechanical switches, and analogue-style dials. This is a welcome change from the typical glass slabs found in modern electric luxury cars.

A glass key with a built-in E Ink display comes with the vehicle. The start-up sequence and the launch control lever are styled to mimic a helicopter cockpit. These details feel like expensive novelties designed to distract you from the quiet powertrain.

The dedicated electric architecture lowers the center of gravity by 95 millimeters compared to the Purosangue SUV. It also uses active air shutters and ride-height adjustments to achieve the lowest drag coefficient in company history. Aerodynamic efficiency is crucial when you are trying to move two and a half tons of metal.

Michelin, Pirelli, and Bridgestone developed specific tires for this car, including a dry-weather option. The launch vehicle in Rome wore Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Energy Acoustic tires with K1 homologation markings. Specialized rubber is necessary to keep this much mass glued to the pavement during cornering.

The body and chassis are constructed using 75 percent recycled aluminum. This is a proud talking point for the marketing department. It does not change the fact that the car weighs nearly 5,000 pounds.

UBS, a Swiss investment bank, noted that loyal buyers will likely keep the order books filled despite the initial design backlash. The ultra-wealthy are less sensitive to aesthetic changes when a badge carries this much social weight. Your money pays for the status of the badge rather than the physical materials of the car.

The carmaker is targeting customer deliveries for the fourth quarter of 2026. Production will take place at the brand’s main facility in Maranello. This keeps the physical assembly in Italy, even if the creative direction came from a studio in California.

The manual torque shifting mode allows you to use steering wheel paddles to build simulated gears. An electric acoustic system matches this progression to make the drive feel more mechanical. Why would a manufacturer build an electric car only to spend millions of dollars mimicking a petrol engine?

The rear coach doors open in opposite directions to allow easy access to the back seats. Passengers will find more legroom here than in any previous model from the brand. This is a luxury cruiser built primarily for a comfortable commute. It is completely unsuited for track-day use.

The rear taillights are designed to recede completely into the bodywork when switched off. Unlit, the rear fascia remains completely smooth. It is a clever design trick that does little to improve the overall driving experience.

The Rolls-Royce Spectre and the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT are the primary competitors in this weight class. Each of these options has already established a firm place in the market. You should look closely at them before making a final judgment on this new category of vehicle.

The factory is offering a seven-year maintenance program and an eight-year warranty on the electric powertrain. This coverage is generous for a vehicle in this price bracket. It shows that the company is trying to ease the anxiety of traditional buyers who are skeptical of battery technology.

Ferrari is priced at roughly 640,000 dollars, placing it above the brand’s hybrid sports cars. A traditional Italian sportscar experience is absent from this platform. Those looking for raw mechanics and engine noise will have to look at the secondary market for older V12 models.
