Review: The 2026 Volkswagen ID. Polo Life is the Return to Common Sense

The sum of 33,795 euros is the baseline price for the new Volkswagen ID. Polo Life in Germany. You can buy one today, but you will have to wait for the cheaper versions to arrive. Volkswagen has built a compact electric hatchback that aims to capture the budget-conscious European market. It is a vital car for a company that has struggled to make its electric vehicles feel like true people’s cars.

Three distinct competitors stand in the path of this new German entrant. Each of them offers a different interpretation of what an entry-level electric vehicle should be. They are chasing the same urban buyers who used to buy petrol-powered superminis.

A price of 27,900 euros is the entry point for the Renault 5 E-Tech in the German market. That car relies heavily on retro styling to win buyers. It has a smaller battery than this Volkswagen and cannot match its interior space.

The Chinese challenger, the MG4 EV Urban, starts even lower at 24,990 euros. It represents a serious threat to European established brands. The aggressive pricing makes it a tempting option, but the build quality is not quite up to German standards.

Mini demands 28,450 euros for their base Cooper E. It is a premium product with a focus on fashion and sharp handling. The cabin is cramped and the range is disappointing for anything other than short city trips.

Volkswagen promises a cheaper base model called the Trend for 24,995 euros later this year. You cannot order it today because the supply of lithium iron phosphate batteries is delayed. If you want the electric Polo now, the Life trim is your only option. You will have to pay the premium.

Four hundred and fifty-four kilometers is the official WLTP range for the ID. Polo Life. The manufacturer claims this figure is achievable on a single charge under ideal conditions. You should treat this number as a theoretical maximum rather than a daily reality.

An increased rate of degradation is the primary drawback of this chemistry if you repeatedly charge it past eighty percent. You must manage this carefully if you want the battery to last. Do not charge it to one hundred percent unless you are about to start a long journey.

Setting the charging limit to eighty percent is the most effective way to protect this battery chemistry. You can do this easily in the infotainment menu. Keep it there for your daily commute.

The MEB+ platform is the architectural foundation of this vehicle. It is an evolution of the platform that underpins the larger ID.3 and ID.4. Volkswagen has modified it to suit smaller, cheaper cars.

A front-wheel-drive layout is used here, departing from the rear-wheel-drive setup of the larger ID.3. This is an unusual move for Volkswagen’s electric era. The decision was made to maximize interior space and lower the production costs.

Cost reduction was the driving force behind this change. Placing the motor at the front simplifies the high-voltage wiring and the assembly process. It also means you lose the tight turning circle of the rear-wheel-drive models.

A heating system without a heat pump will consume significantly more battery power in winter. This will result in a severe range penalty. Buy the optional heat pump and do not let the salesperson convince you otherwise.

MacPherson struts are utilized for the front suspension of the ID. Polo. This is a standard industry solution for compact cars. It is simple, reliable, and cheap to repair.

The rear axle features a simple torsion beam setup. This is a step down from the multi-link rear suspension found on the ID.3. Volkswagen chose this simpler layout to save space and money.

The multi-link rear suspension was abandoned to maximize cargo volume. It was a trade-off that favors practicality over outright handling. You will notice the difference if you drive both cars back to back.

A softer damping tune allows the car to glide over broken urban asphalt. The ride comfort is surprisingly good for a vehicle with a relatively short wheelbase. It handles speed bumps with a maturity that eludes many of its rivals.

Significant body lean occurs when you enter a bend with too much speed. The soft suspension does not keep the body flat under hard cornering. This is not a hot hatch, despite the generous horsepower figure.

No adaptive dampers are available on the options list for the Life trim. You are stuck with the standard setup. If you want a sharper drive, you will have to wait for the GTI version.

This chassis is engineered for comfort rather than athletic handling. It is a sensible choice for a daily commuter. Do not buy this car expecting a sporty experience.

Four individual physical switches are now present on the driver’s armrest. This is a direct reversal of the widely despised two-switch setup from the ID.3, which required you to press a touch-sensitive toggle to operate the rear windows. It was a stupid design, and Volkswagen was right to kill it.

Tactile buttons have replaced the capacitive touch sliders on the steering wheel. You can now adjust the volume and cruise control by pressing a real button that clicks. You will no longer change the radio station by accident when turning the wheel.

A dedicated physical row of buttons controls the basic climate functions on the dashboard. You can adjust the temperature and the fan speed without looking at a screen. The buttons are backlit, which makes them easy to find at night.

A mechanical volume roller is positioned on the center console. It sits exactly where your hand rests naturally. It is a simple, elegant solution that should never have been removed from modern cars.

Touchscreen controls distract the driver and create safety hazards on the move. Trying to adjust the heater while driving at highway speeds on a bumpy road is a recipe for disaster. Volkswagen’s return to physical switchgear is a victory for common sense.

The 33-centimeter central screen remains for navigation and media. It uses the latest software which is fast and responsive. The menus are logical and the screen does not lag when you swipe.

Volkswagen made the correct decision by returning to physical controls in the cabin. It makes the car safer and much more pleasant to live with. Other manufacturers should follow their lead.

Four hundred and forty-one liters of cargo volume are available in the trunk. This is an astonishing figure for a car of this size. It is larger than the boot of a standard Volkswagen Golf, despite the Polo being ten inches shorter.

A total of 1,243 liters is available once you fold the rear seatbacks flat. The load floor is flat and there is no annoying lip to lift heavy items over. It is a triumph of packaging.

ID. Software 6.0 runs the digital displays. It is an Android-based system that is a massive improvement over previous iterations. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without dropping the connection.

Travel Assist is standard on the Life trim. It combines adaptive cruise control and lane centering to reduce the stress of long highway journeys. The system is smooth and does not make sudden, jerky corrections.

The system can now automatically recognize and bring the vehicle to a halt at red traffic lights. This is a first for this segment. It works reliably in city traffic, but you should always keep your foot near the brake pedal.

A basic two-year warranty is what Volkswagen provides for this car. This is a disappointingly short period of coverage. Many of their Asian competitors offer five or seven years of peace of mind.

No long-term reliability data exists for this specific model because of its recent release. It is a brand-new vehicle on an updated platform. You are taking a minor gamble if you buy one in the first year of production.

The simple torsion beam suspension and front-wheel-drive motor are unlikely to cause costly mechanical headaches. There are fewer complex components to wear out over time. If you keep the software updated, this should be a reliable vehicle.
